Breaking News ! Marvin Rees has said he is open to the decriminalisation of cannabis. Three candidates for the Bristol Mayor election next month have said they support a change in the law on cannabis, either by decriminalisation or legalisation. The news comes after Sadiq Khan has pledged to establish a drugs commission in London if re-elected, bringing together a group of independent experts for “fresh ideas” on drugs. However, Downing Street has said that Boris Johnson has “absolutely no intention of legalising cannabis” and insisted that policy on controlled drugs was a matter for central Government. And now a spokesperson for Marvin Rees, the current Bristol Mayor who is running for re-election in May, has said: "The Mayor is open to decriminalisation of cannabis and supports an independent commission, as proposed by the Mayor of London. "The Bristol Labour Party manifesto includes a commitment to lobbying the Government to allow Bristol to pilot safe drug consumption rooms." The spokesperson said Parliament’s cross-party Scottish affairs committee suggested safe consumption sites were proven to reduce overdoses, drug deaths, blood-borne virus infection rates and public injecting. They're currently illegal under UK law but, if re-elected, Marvin Rees and the Labour councillors are committed to lobbying for a pilot in Bristol, the spokesperson continued. Sandy Hore-Ruthven, the Green Party’s candidate for Bristol Mayor, said the party's policy is for cannabis legalisation as there is no point in criminalising thousands of people every year for using what he described as a very mild drug. "You are criminalising people for using a drug that has been proven to have very few side effects," he said. "By legalising it [cannabis], you can tax it and control quality.

. The mayoral candidate said that, if elected, he would not set up a drugs commission in Bristol as he is mindful of resources, adding the focus would be on lobbying government instead. "Legalisation [of cannabis] is not a super priority for me as there are much more pressing issues for Bristol," he continued. "We have other priorities in Bristol such as housing, tackling climate change or the economic recovery after the covid crisis." Dr Caroline Gooch, the Liberal Democrats mayoral candidate, said she supports the legalisation of cannabis. She added: "Without any controls on quality or strength, the product of cannabis sold is becoming ever more potent and harmful to physical health as well as mental health. "Taking a public health approach is vital, working with health, community, and social support organisations. "Having a public health approach is essential for tackling drug use generally, not just cannabis." Local elections will take place on Thursday, May 6, to elect the Mayor of Bristol and all Bristol City Council councillors. Voters will also be going to polls on the same day to elect the next Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and the Combined Authority Mayor for the West of England (WECA).
