Breaking News ! A man was seen climbing out of a window on to a ledge four storeys high in Bristol today, after a fire trapped him on the top floor of a building. The blaze broke out at about 11am this morning (Saturday, October 17) at a block of flats in Bishop Street, St Pauls. Matt Whiteley, who lives nearby, said he heard sirens and saw the "bonkers" scene unfold as it happened. He said: "It must have been really, really scary for that bloke. "I saw him climb out of a small window on the top floor and smoke was coming out. "There was also a family on the ground floor, firefighters broke down the door with an axe and got them out." Georgina Halligan, whose window also looks out to Bishop Street, witnessed the dramatic rescue as well. She said: "I heard all the commotion outside and saw there was a house on fire. "The poor chap had to climb out on the roof - he was enveloped in smoke. "They [emergency crews] were running around in the street and sent the cherry picker ladder up, and plucked him off the roof.

." Four fire engines and three ambulances blocked off the road during the rescue, but the road is now accessible again. Martyn White, a station manager at Avon Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that several residents were rescued by fire crews. He told Bristol Live : "We forced entry to a front door and rescued a lady and two children from the ground floor flat. "A man was trying to get our attention from the roof and we used the turntable ladder to get to him. "It was an established fire." He said the building was four storeys high. The cause of the fire had not yet been established.
