MetiNews.Com - Full post-match press conference from the Robins boss
Breaking News ! What are your thoughts on tonight Dean? The first 35 minutes of the game gave us the platform we needed, we knew what Northampton were going to throw at us from a physical point of view, so it was an important part of the game, early on, but I think we did well. We were just a little bit sloppy really, to begin with, especially with our final ball. But as soon as we took care of that final pass, straight away we got the goal for Antoine which was disallowed. We hit the post, the bar through Niclas’ freekick. And then we took the game by the scruff of the neck, we got the goal. To score so early into the second half was really pleasing. It’s then about dominating and taking your chances. Behind the ball defensively I thought we were outstanding, we moved it well and the second half was a joy to watch. We switched off a couple of times from set-pieces, which is something that we need to keep improving at. We’re nowhere near where we want to be. I’m just glad we got the win, the performance, and the goals to match it. Nine changes can make it look like we weren’t taking it seriously, but we were. What does it say about the strength of the squad that you can make nine changes and it’s still a pretty good performance overall? We know how good the players are. It shows that we’re in a confident mood, before the game at the weekend I said to them that just because you’re not starting this game it doesn’t mean that you won’t get your chance, you just need to take it next time. It’s building that spirit, and everybody was in there after the game, the squads, the non-starters, and the atmosphere is good. We move on to Stoke City. When we spoke after the first game I said to you that I thought the team was a bit light-weight and that you needed to add a bit of physical strength. Chris Martin comes in, Alfie Mawson comes in. You’ve now got that physical spine to the team that your flair players can play off. You can’t just be good at one thing in this division. You can’t just be a good passing team, you can’t just be good on the counter-attack, you can’t just be good from set-pieces, you’ve got to have a nice balance. Tomas Kalas went off injured, what's the problem? It’s a shoulder injury, I’ve not seen him since he came off. We’ll go and see, I’ll have to go and see him. I said to the players that things go wrong. Taylor Moore’s got to come on after six or seven minutes of the game. The injury is not what we want, but we have to find solutions to these problems. Kasey Palmer is challenged by Ryan Watson of Northampton Aston Villa up next...
. Aston Villa next up in this though, no crowd but a Premier League club again. Good memories of this competition. The fans have got great memories of this competition. We want to go as far in it as we can, it builds momentum, we’ll deal with it after Stoke because this is a big game on Sunday. To go four from four at this stage of the season would be huge for us. That’s all our focus is on. What did Kasey Palmer have in his half-time cup of tea? He was a man possessed, wasn’t he? He was, he’s a good player, isn’t he?! We know what Kasey Palmer can do when he’s at it, there was a little bit of showboating towards the end! But he got stuck in and what a good player he is, he was affecting the game in the right areas tonight which was important because sometimes he comes a little bit too deep to get on the ball. But now he’s trusting that the ball is going to come to him in the right areas, and he’s affecting the game with his assists. He could have had a hat-trick couldn’t he, barring an offside against Antoine. I have to say, he was very good on the night, but he can’t do it on his own, and the ten players around him were at the top of their games as well. You could just see the quality that Chris Martin brings, he played so well up front... He’s just so clever too, he’s smart, he holds the ball up at the right time and he releases the ball at the right time. These momentum shifts in games are huge and of course managing that is a big part of any result.
Chris Martin of Bristol City scores a goal to make it 1-0
You had a tough game against Stoke at the back end of last season, are you expecting the same on Sunday? For sure, yes. I think it will be even tougher because Michael has had them for a full pre-season now, and I hold him in the highest regard. They’ve got some good players, they’re a big team in this division. What’s gone before has gone before, they’re a team to be reckoned with this season with that management team behind them. We will focus on ourselves ready for a huge game for us, even so early on in the season. A 2pm kick-off on a Sunday doesn’t really matter too much to you, does it? Not at all! We just get ourselves ready for the game, in this division you’re playing at all times of the day. Any update on Jay Dasilva? No, it’s, later on, this week that he’s going to see a guy, so nothing at all with that I’m afraid. How did you celebrate your birthday yesterday? Relaxed and had a chippy! It was pretty chilled out, to be honest, nice and calm. Hopefully, I’ll be able to have some time with the family this weekend after hopefully getting a good result against Stoke.

Had you spoken to Dean Smith about the potential Aston Villa tie? No, no, not yet. I thought I’d leave it until after the Stoke game, and this was always going to be a tricky one, they put Cardiff to bed in the first round. If you allow them to play like they want to play then it can be a real tough night for you. I thought we dealt with them really well. Mark Ashton looked like he shook your hand before the game on Saturday, you guys were on the pitch together before the first match last week, just wondering what he said to you? Was it a case of wishing you luck? I thought you were going to ask me about the COVID thing then and shaking his hand! I thought I gave him a fist bump! I can’t remember, to be honest, that was four days ago! A lot has happened since then, we’ve had four games I can’t remember! I’m sure it would have been good luck ahead of the league season.
