Breaking News ! By eck we've not seen a game like that one for a while: once Bristol City got on top there was no stopping them. We regularly check the Expected Goals returns and that game will be as good as it gets for some time - the Robins were rampant. Yes, it was only Northampton Town and time will tell if they're a good League One side or merely a Bristol Rovers but then again last January Shrewsbury Town were only a mere mid-table League One side and we all know what happened there. Semenyo getting better and better Watch out Wells and do shape up, Diedhiou: City's new kid on the block is getting better and better. Antoine Semenyo has two goals and two assists from his two games in the League Cup. There is raw potential there and surely supporters now can see what the fuss is about. That was Semenyo's best game and he looks comfortable as part of a front two, where he can play off Chris Martin or Famara Diedhiou. Semenyo is still only 20 and is beginning to show some of that Newport County form that enticed interest from elsewhere. And full credit to Dean Holden who seems to be getting a tune from the barrell-chested striker. Kasey Palmer rejuvenated At the beginning of this year, Lee Johnson was cursing Palmer for not tracking Shrewsbury Town defender and former City trialist Aaron Pierre, whose left foot shot won the FA Cup Tie at Gay Meadow and saw an irate Johnson then accuse Palmer of costing the club £1m and a money-spinning match against Liverpool. Fast forward to September in the same year and Palmer is this time slaying a League One outfit, having scored two goals, set up one, had a goal disallowed and set up another for Semenyo in the first half that was also disallowed. Man management? We're not sure but either way Palmer should not be written off just yet. We wrote before Wednesday's game that the ex-Chelsea man's talents look to be a great fit in this system and that if he can find form and consistency he could become a key member of the team down the line. Kasey Palmer is challenged by Ryan Watson of Northampton The 23-year-old was outstanding against the Cobblers, with a header from a corner harshly ruled out for offside denying him a hatr-trick, but a superb piece of link-up play setting up Semenyo late in the game to score. Brilliant attacking play but that must be just the start. Tomas Kalas injury The one bad mark: captain Tomas Kalas going off injured during the game, after just six minutes of play. It looked fairly innocuous and Dean Holden asked something of his captain before he left the field of play, receiving a shale of the head.

. "It’s a shoulder injury. I’ve not seen him since he came off," said Holden after the game. Bristol City assistant head coach Paul Simpson and Bristol City head coach Dean Holden (Image: Rogan/JMP) "I saw him at half-time and he just had his arm up," said Chris Martin after the game. "He said he wasn't too sure how it is and it'll have to be assessed." Chris Martin is class Pass it on. Every time the ball came to him it stuck. He was adept at pinning his marker in place and retaining the ball. Even better he was able to link up play, often laying off intelligently into space for Semenyo to run onto or for Steven Sessegnon to run onto. Following the game, we spoke to Martin about why he chose to come to Ashton Gate this summer. Dean Holden and references he knew from players already in BS3 featured heavily. A fine display on Wednesday night then, to go with a good cameo at the weekend. Famara Diedhiou's place in the team is under real threat. After a quiet first half, the 20-year-old got plenty of the ball in the second period, flashing over plenty of dangerous crosses - the best of which was blasted right at Semenyo and subsequently headed over the bar, tough as it was to angle downwards. There was nimble footwork too, acceleration and aggression without the ball. It was in the end a good performance from the new man too and a solid base to build on in the months ahead. The England U21 man looks a good recruit on this display.
