Sawiris was the third biggest shareholder in Signature Aviation - the world's biggest operator of private jet bases - with Bloomberg detailing how the Egyptian has struck a deal to sell his 7.42 per cent stake to a consortium led by Blackstone Group Inc., which has the backing of US business magnate and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. This could potentially free up funds for investment into his other companies, of which Aston Villa is one. The Wall Street Journal, meanwhile, has outlined how Sawiris is due to get a slice of the reported $4.7 billion takeover deal involving Signature Aviation, with Gates' Cascade Investment LLC teaming up with Blackstone Group Inc. and private-equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners in a deal that would boost Cascade's stake to 30 per cent, from a previous 19 per cent, with Gates' Cascade taking Sawiris' relatively small 7.42 per cent stake.
