Breaking News ! A Tory councillor has quit the party over concerns about Tamworth Borough Council’s controlling party. Former mayor and Mercian councillor Richard Kingstone will stand as an Independent candidate at the next elections in May after formally resigning on Sunday. He left the controlling group in July but remained a member of Tamworth Conservative Association until now. Coun Kingstone admitted he was considering his future earlier this year after a controversial application for 141 new homes was given the green light. At a planning meeting, councillors voted five to three in favour of the Coton Lane proposal. But four councillors left the meeting after declaring an interest in the development and Coun Kingstone says that left him feeling uneasy. Cllr Kingstone. He will now put his name forward as an independent candidate for Mercian Ward in the Tamworth Council elections and Perrycrofts Division in the Staffordshire County Council elections. He said: “I have been thinking about this very carefully. Since the fall out in the summer it was inevitable something like this might happen. “Over the past few years I have been increasingly concerned about the attitude of some members of the controlling group and the cabinet, not all but some. I think, from a moral viewpoint, the arrogance of certain members has gone to their head. “It is clear the controlling group at Tamworth Borough Council is not going to change for the better. "Tthey are desperate to strengthen their grip on the borough council and keep control of the county council divisions here in Tamworth as well. "So let's take the fight to them. It is time to challenge that, stand up and be counted. If you are going to try and change it then change it from the inside. The former Mayor of Tamworth Richard Kingstone cuts the ribbon to officially open the Assembly Rooms in Corporation Street, Tamworth. "As I have said on record in the past, I still consider myself a Conservative regardless of finding myself unable to remain a member of the Tamworth Conservative Association or the controlling group on Tamworth Borough Council.

. However, I will support Christoper Pincher as our MP as much as I can and he will allow. It is vital we maintain a Conservative MP and a Conservative government. “It has been an incredible eight years. I have had a wonderful time. It has been an honour to represent the people of the Mercian ward and to help work towards making Tamworth an incredible place to live. “I don’t think people realise that the average councillor does so much on a personal level to support private individuals in their time of need. "Working with some of the most vulnerable people in the area and enabling them to succeed in achieving improvements to their life has been the most humbling of things to do. Richard Kingstone “Serving as mayor twice was also a wonderful thing and I am so grateful to have been able to do it. If my journey as a councillor ends in May next year then so be it. It is a matter for the public to decide whether you should stay or go. They are always right.” In response, Coun John Chesworth, chairman of Tamworth Conservative Association, said: “It is unfortunate that CounKingstone has reached this decision. “It is also disappointing he has chosen to conduct himself in a very public way via the press and social media. “At no time has Coun Kingstone followed due process and raised any formal complaint with the controlling group, Tamworth Conservative Association or the Conservative Party. “He actually attended the AGM of the Association on Friday evening and again made no comment or raised any issue. “To quote Coun Kingstone - ‘If you are going to try and change it then change it from the inside’. If he genuinely had an issue I’d like to think that he would have tried that approach. He has apparently chosen not to do that.”
