Breaking News ! Street racers have been warned to stay out of an area in Birmingham tonight as cops step up patrols. Neighbourhood officers will be joining with other officers including traffic cops for the action in Nechells tonight. Officers warned drivers could have their cars seized if they took part in illegal street racing. A message from Nechells Police said: "If you were thinking of visiting Nechells this evening to take part in illegal street racing then DON'T. "Nechells NHT (neighbourhood team) are on duty working with other Officers including @Trafficwmp. "Enforcement action WILL be taken, your vehicle could even be seized." The police action tonight is part of Operation Hercules, a major crackdown on illegal car cruisers launched in May 2020. An injunction banning the illegal gatherings in Birmingham and the Black Country is back in place after it lapsed during a hold-up earlier this year. The order ended on Monday, February 1 and a hearing was set extend the injunction at the High Court in London on April 28.
. They can be fined or jailed for up to two years, and the ban also applies to people who go to watch the events. Drivers whose cars are spotted at these events will also be reported to their insurers – meaning policies could be cancelled or premiums shoot up.
Birmingham has previously been branded the street racing capital of the UK. Three years after the injunction was introduced, statistics from the DVLA revealed by firm Select Car Leasing showed Birmingham had the most drivers in the whole country convicted of ‘motor racing on the highway’. There have been many incidents of street racing filmed in Birmingham since the injunction was brought into force.
In once incident, hundreds gathered to watch illegal racing along the Heartlands Parkway near Star City. One resident said it went on every Sunday. In May 2018, Atif Qasim became the first person to be jailed for flouting the car cruising injunction as he reached up to 90mph in his Volkswagen Golf along the Heartlands Parkway.
