MetiNews.Com - Arsenal were linked with a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton this month after selling Emiliano Martinez to Dean Smith's side in the summer transfer window

Breaking News ! Martin Keown has criticised Arsenal’s decision to sell Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa after his former side were forced to reinforce their goalkeeping department. Martinez joined Villa in a £20million deal in September despite seeing out last season as Arsenal’s first-choice stopper following an injury to Germany international Bernd Leno. He helped the Gunners lift the FA Cup and started the Community Shield victory against Liverpool in August, but was told afterwards that Leno would return as Mikel Arteta’s No.1. The goalkeeper they signed shortly after, Iceland international Alex Runarsson, has struggled and made several high-profile errors. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed his plans to reinforce the position earlier in the month and there were claims Villa's Tom Heaton was a potential option. Heaton has been back on the bench for Villa in the last four league matches having recently returned from injury. Instead, Arsenal have swooped to take Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan on loan to the Emirates - and Keown told talkSPORT: “Runarsson didn't really catch the eye or the performance that we would have expected. “If you remember in the League Cup [against City] there were a few mistakes [but he's a] very young man, of course, who has got a big career ahead of him. “I was disappointed to see Martinez leave in the first place, when you consider he climbed a mountain last year to get into the team. But I imagine they couldn't afford to keep two, what I would call, first-string goalkeepers.

“Financially, maybe, they didn't see that was the right way forward and he was allowed to leave. “This is a good adjustment, Mat Ryan coming in. 59 caps for Australia and he's their number one goalkeeper. He's been out of the team at Brighton. “He's coming with good experience and that's what Arsenal need in the event that Leno gets injured at any point.”
