Breaking News ! Speeding fines plunged by 75 per cent in the West Midlands in the first full month of lockdown - costing the Government almost £600,000. New figures show 7,585 motorists were zapped by cameras in February before the coronavirus curfews began. Yet in April that figure had dramatically fallen to just 1,926 - down 74 per cent - as the country was in the grip of lockdown. Motorists face a minimum £100 fine for speeding, so the drop of 5,695 in fines equates to a minimum loss of £569,500 to the Government. At the start of April police chiefs warned the public to to resist the urge to travel over the Easter period - or face potential fines. Yet it later emerged that Boris Johnson's special advisor Dominic Cummings had driving to visit Barnard Castle in Durham on April 12. He had travelled up from London in late March for childcare reasons, as both he and his wife had been hit by the virus. He denied doing anything wrong and insisted the additional castle visit was because he wanted to test his eyesight before driving back to London.

. Sergeant Jon Butler, from the road harm prevention team, had said: "While the vast majority of motorists have respected the speed limits during COVID-19 restrictions, we have seen examples of reckless and dangerous behaviour. "Travelling at speed can have devastating consequences, not just for yourself but others, and also places more strain on our NHS." West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson had added: "There is absolutely no excuse for speeding on our roads, turning them into race tracks and threatening the lives of others. "Speed kills, leaving tragedy behind for many innocent people and families who become victims of other people’s reckless actions." Last month, police released shocking footage of a driver hitting 140mph on the M6 Toll during a speeding crackdown by motorway cops (see video at top of article). Nearly 300 motorists using the M6 and A500 in Staffordshire were also busted breaking the speed limit during the May campaign by Central Motorway Police Group. Officers caught some driving at double the speed limit, with one motorist reaching 141mph.
