MetiNews.Com - Here's the gaffer's tape after Villa's 2-0 victory over Newcastle extended their unbeaten record at Villa Park to three consecutive games thanks to goals from Watkins and Traore
Breaking News ! Dean Smith spoke of his pride after watching his Aston Villa players dominate Newcastle from start to finish last night. The head coach was sat in the directors' box in the Trinity Road Stand for the 2-0 victory after serving his one-match touchline ban for insulting officials at Man City in midweek. Smith was wired up to Neil Cutler who was on the touchline but, after the match, remerged to take questions from Sky Sports and the written press following his side's comfortable victory. Here's what Smith said: YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT? "We were really comfortable on the ball today and our rest defending was good. Second half I thought we overplayed at times and got a little bit sloppy. But for our final touch or pass, we could have scored more as well." PLEASED FOR WATKINS? Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa celebrates with teammate Bertrand Traore after scoring "Really pleased. It always weighs on forward's minds as much as they tell you it doesn't. It was nice for him to get an early goal and he had chances to get others. There was a couple of pushes in his back where he could have had penalties but I'm really pleased. It was a solid performance and another clean sheet at home." IMPORTANT TO START WINNING AGAIN? "Yeah. We've had three tough away games against Chelsea, Man United and Man City. They're always going to be tough them fixtures and we only got one point. We had a few debatable decisions go against us in Manchester but today was a really good performance and we did what we had to do." BARKLEY AND GREALISH NOT HAPPY COMING OFF? Jack Grealish of Aston Villa and Jonjo Shelvey of Newcastle United battle for the ball "Yeah, they were. But, listen, I've got Jack on four yellows at the moment (one away from a ban). He didn't look fatigued but the last couple of days he's had a tight hamstring. When you feel the game is done you can take a player like Jack off. In terms of Ross (Barkley), he's just catching up on minutes on the football pitch after having eight weeks off. Both of them showed the quality they've got." UPDATE ON POTENTIAL NEW SIGNING YOU'VE MADE, MORGAN SANSON? Dean Smith, manager of Aston Villa (R) looks on from the stands with sporting director Johan Lange "I can't to be honest. I've not spoken to our sporting director (Johan Lange), I've just been concentrating on the game because, obviously, there's an inbound player we're looking to do so, hopefully, that can get done soon." DID YOU BELIEVE THE GOAL WOULD COME FOR WATKINS? "I've got no doubts about the way Ollie works in training and in games, he endears himself to the rest of the team. With the qualities he's got he's always going to score goals. He's been through a patch where he's been hitting the crossbar, post and goalkeepers making really good saves. He's had VAR not doing its job at times as well. We've not doubted his quality and his performances. Goals are always going to come." We showed good passages of play but, in the second half, we tried to overplay a little bit and tried to run down the clock instead of going for goals and making the game more comfortable. We got a little bit sloppy but we could have scored a few on the counters as well because we broke really quickly and really brightly." DID YOU GET THE BETTER DEAL WITH WATKINS OVER WILSON? Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa (left) and .
. My sights were always firmly on Ollie having worked with him before. Callum Wilson is a very good player and we had to defend well against him. Ollie was one I was always looking to do. UPTO EIGHTH, WHERE ARE YOU LOOKING, TOP SIX, TOP FOUR? "We're just looking at the next game. We've come through a difficult spell playing Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City and have taken only one point which we feel hard done by after a few debatable decisions. It was important that we came back to Villa Park and win the game and we did that."

Newcastle United sent Steve Bruce instructions after 'abysmal' Aston Villa defeat
WHAT WAS IT LIKE IN THE DIRECTORS' BOX? "It's not something that will catch on for me, that's for sure! It's a good view, I'm not too far away from where I normally stand anyway but it's the fact you can communicate too much and can't shout onto the pitch and get some messages out that you want to. The lads made it comfortable for me with their performance so that was pleasing." HOW WAS JACK'S HAMSTRING? "He didn't do an awful lot in training yesterday and he wasn't happy I brought him off with a little over five minutes to go. I thought it was game over and he's on four yellows as well plus there's that risk of getting him kicked so that was the right time (to take him off)." TRAORE'S INFLUENCE ON GAMES KEEPS GETTING BETTER...
Aston Villa's Bertrand Traore celebrates scoring his side's second goal
"He does. He's making a really good contribution to the team at the moment. We feel that we've got some really good attacking players. We brought him in for the quality he's got but I suppose it always takes a while to settle when you come from abroad like he has. He's settled in really quickly to be fair to him and he's getting the rewards of the work he's putting in. I always knew he had the qualities and the skills but it's his work rate without the ball that's really impressed me. He's a very good player and it's been tough to leave Anwar (El Ghazi) out because he was up for player of the month for December." SIGNING MATTY CASH, ALWAYS A RISK FOR A PLAYER STEPPING UP, LOOKS LIKE HE'S PLAYED THERE FOR AGES... "If you look at both Ollie and Matt Cash who have come from the Championship; the thing that stands out is their attitude. The two of them are a bundle of joy to work with and their attitude is the main reason. They want to get better and to get out and play football and to improve. That's a dream for any coach. It's great to have Ross back as well. He wasn't happy coming off but he's just done 65 minutes and now 75 minutes after having eight weeks out. The qualities we've got going forward is improving, especially with Trezeguet coming back as well." A SHORT HOP TO LIVERPOOL IN THE TOP FOUR; PLAYERS WILL BE THINKING ABOUT EUROPE, SURELY? "No, Liverpool's still two hours up the motorway, it's a lot further than you think! In terms of the table we're just looking at the next game. We've just come through a period where we've had a Covid outbreak where we haven't played for three weeks but our last three games have been away to Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City. It was important that we got the win today. We've got games to catch up on as well but we'll just concentrate on the games we've got to come."
