Breaking News ! Dean Smith admitted his beer wouldn't have tasted as nice at it normally would after Saturday's 2-1 defeat to 10-man Brighton. The head coach was left frustrated after referee Michael Oliver went back on his decision to award Villa a last-minute penalty following a lengthy VAR check. It was Egyptian winger Trezeguet who was tripped inside the penalty area by goal-scorer Solly March right at the death with Smith left fuming at Oliver's decision rule no penalty. As far at the match went, Danny Welbeck scored his first for Brighton after running the length of Villa's half before calmly lifting the ball over Emi Martinez. Villa were, of course, denied a penalty late after Oliver checked the monitor situated at the Doug Ellis Stand before the whistle blew for full-time. Here's everything Smith said afterwards, including an update on the injured Ross Barkley who hobbled off with a hamstring injury just minutes into Villa's latest setback: Reaction to penalty situation? Referee Michael Oliver checks the VAR pitch side monitor before settling on the decision of no penalty (Image: Getty Images) "There was a bit of drama towards the end. Obviously, the referee's awarded the penalty and I think anywhere else on the pitch it's a foul. VAR asked the referee to go upstairs and overturns it so there's nothing we can do. "It's frustrating. I'm not sure any of us know what are penalties and what aren't at the moment. I was more frustrated at the fact we had some big chances today and didn't take them. We weren't our blistering best by any means but we weren't bad. If we'd have done that we would have won the game. There was still some naive defending at times for their goal and when Maupay went through as well when Emi had to come outside of his box to save it. "The second goal as well, there was some naivety and there would have been some tired legs but that's the same for everyone." A perfect reaction after the restart... Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa celebrates with teammates after scoring (Image: Getty Images)   "Yeah, we looked a threat from set-pieces, certainly from our free-kicks. I thought Ty should have scored. He went with his foot rather than his head in the first half and Ollie as well. "We had a great start to the second half and were on top after the goal as well. That's when tiredness kicked in, 15 minutes into the second half and they get a poor goal from our behalf. We never squeezed up, Douglas didn't drop into the 18-yard box and Cashy didn't get across quick enough for Solly Marsh with the goal." Trezeguet could have had two or three... "Yeah, he had some big chances today.

. He'll feel he should have scored. It just wasn't his day. He keeps knocking on the door trying to score, he had the one at Arsenal taken off him the own-goal. He had chances today and, unfortunately, if you don't take them you come unstuck." "We've conceded too many goals at home already. The Southampton game was a freak game. The only team who've deserved to beat us is Leeds. We should never have lost (vs Brighton) and we need to be better at home." Bertrand Traore's performance... Bertrand Traore of Aston Villa looks on during the warm up (Image: Getty Images) "I'm really disappointed for Ross (Barkley) first and foremost for getting injured so early which meant we had to re-jig it straight away. "I thought Berti looked bright early on but he needs to get better defensively without the ball and work his fitness having just come back from injury. He went away and played a game but we've had three lads who've come back from Africa and two from South America but it is the same for all teams so I'm not going to make an issue out of that." How's Barkley... Ross Barkley of Aston Villa receives medical attention (Image: Getty Images)   "I've just spoken to him. I'm gutted for him but he doesn't think it's as bad as they can be. Until we get it scanned we don't know. We'll be hopeful, I suppose. Looking to West Ham... "We don't play until Monday but it's not a nice feeling coming away from a game - where you know you should have got something from - with nothing. Certainly a beer I'll normally have tonight won't taste as nice as it normally would."
