Patients being admitted to hospitals in Birmingham and Solihull due to Covid is rising all the time and her appearance on the show is being questioned by some. University Hospitals Birmingham revealed the current strain it was under earlier this week and said it was acting to protect critical services, including turning away anyone who arrives at A&E who does not need urgent hospital care. Elective operations and outpatient services are also under review. Trickytaylors tweeted: "If she's got time for Strictly now, what the hell did she spend her time doing at the Trust pre-Covid!!!!" Japhy Ryder tweeted: "Brilliant. The hospital has semi shut it’s A&E “Let’s have a little dance shall we?” Non execs perform a vital role is holding blinkered (for want of a better phrase) hospital managers to account for wider issues." But some also showed support for her as she began her journey on the show. Charlotteukcity tweeted: "Loving the @Jacqui_Smith1 and @TheAntonDuBeke pairing. It’s the perfect match of elegance and fun. I think this is going to be a great #Strictly year.
. Team Jacqui & Anton all the way!!" MP Harriet Baldwin tweeted: "So glamorous- good luck and enjoy!" Best of luck to @Jacqui_Smith1 from all @ROHNHSFT. Make @uhbtrust proud .You will be great and if you and any of your fellow contestants ortho back up ! We are here."
The former MP for Redditch had previously told BirminghamLive said she was stepping back from October to focus on the BBC show - and would be 'on the end of a laptop and phone'. She said: "From October I am taking a step back. "I talked to hospitals' chief executive Dave Rosser before I said yes and he was happy for me to go ahead. The response from staff has been brilliant, they are really excited."

Dr Rosser, CEO, of the trust, had previously said: “We are really excited that Jacqui has agreed to be in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing. "To have one of our own UHB colleagues starring in one of the most-loved family shows on television is fantastic. We wish her and whoever is lucky enough to be her partner the very, very best of luck. “While Jacqui will still be available for advice, she will take unpaid leave from October 1 while she remains in Strictly. Deputy Chair Harry Reilly will step in during Jacqui’s absence."
