Breaking News ! Dad-to-be Rich Holmes is facing up to the fact that his parents won't be allowed to call round to meet their new grandson this week. Rich, 30, a schools partnership manager, is due to become a dad today (Thursday) when his partner Rosie gives birth by C-section. But, under local lockdown laws imposed by the Government, none of their families will be allowed to call round to offer help and meet the new tot. "My mum won't be legally able to come round to see her new grandson, not even in PPE, not even sat in the garden, but I can get a mobile barber to come and give me a trim. I'm absolutely livid," says Rich, from Acocks Green. He is not alone in struggling to grasp the nuances of local lockdown measures, in force just 48 hours across Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull. Along with 1.6 million others, he is now banned from hosting visitors at home or in the garden, or calling round to the homes of others. Designed to reduce the risk of infection spreading between linked households, where clusters of infection are causing most alarm, the new rules have triggered a backlash, even among those who are desperately keen to support urgent action. Rich and Rosie Rich is one of those - desperate to play his part to drive down infections. But it's a stretch for him to understand a restriction that looks set to colour this once-in-a-lifetime moment for him and his family.

. But now it feels like we are being divided. I can't help thinking if I put a cash till at the door and charged my mum to come in it would be fine." When she returns home, hopefully in a day or so, she will have to stay in bed to recover for several days, with new baby alongside her. But after being denied visitors at hospital, plans for their mums and dads to visit to help around the house and with the baby are also now thwarted. "I could go to toast the baby's arrival down the pub with five mates, or play a 15 aside rugby game, or have a barber round but if my mum comes round to help us we will be breaking the law." Difficult conversations like these are taking place across the city, against a backdrop of the shambles of the NHS test and trace system, adding to the challenge for council public health officials to encourage compliance. Under the new rules, announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, anyone living in Birmingham, Solihull or Sandwell is barred from letting visitors into their home or garden, except under a strict list of exemptions.
