MetiNews.Com - The winger was back in the goals at the weekend to take his tally to six from 15 appearances this season as he looks to maintain that ahead of Sheffield United on Wednesday
Breaking News ! He's the in-and-out Aston Villa performer who's level with Jack Grealish in the goal-scoring charts. Dutchman Anwar El Ghazi returned to form at just the right time up at Leeds last weekend and became the match-winner once again. It took the 25-year-old 11 Premier League matches to claim his first start after his stoppage-time heroics at Wolves back in December. That penalty, according to Dean Smith, injected the former Ajax and Lille man with a new lease of life with the boss since suggesting El Ghazi's all about confidence. The winger was on fire throughout the first half at Elland Road and took his fifth-minute goal really well as he killed the ball stone-dead before finishing with his weaker left foot. El Ghazi had five shots on goal in Yorkshire, three of which were on target with Leeds themselves registering just three shots on target all game. After scoring at Stamford Bridge, he started at Old Trafford but was out of Smith's starting XI for Villa's first fixture back following their Covid outbreak at Man City. Since then he's found starts - and form - hard to come by while he was dragged off at half-time during the disappointing 3-1 home defeat by West Ham last month. El Ghazi was an unused sub against Arsenal and then Brighton but came in for the injured Grealish against Leicester, with Smith himself declaring how El Ghazi failed to do enough before he was taken off for Trezeguet with a little over 20 minutes to go. However, Smith kept faith with his hot-and-cold winger and, after his match-winning performance, has since detailed the conversations he's been having with El Ghazi at Bodymoor Heath. Smith was told how El Ghazi tends to come good knowing others are out injured, but said: "No (that's not the case), he knows me well enough that he knows that if he's not playing well he won't be getting a run of games! Aston Villa's Anwar El Ghazi (left) scores their side's first goal "He has to build up that confidence in himself and how he's playing. "Goals always help people for forward-thinking players.
. "All of the players know who's got the most goals and most assists, so they help with confidence now naturally because they're talked about. "They've certainly helped Anwar. He's got unbelievable physique, he's got great technical skills. "I just want him to keep believing in himself because, when he does, I think he's unplayable at times."

Smith, meanwhile, was quizzed on El Ghazi perhaps lacking in self-belief, to which he replied: "Yes, I do think so at times. Again, we've just spoken about Ezri Konsa and the ceiling's not been reached. It's the same with Anwar, the ceiling hasn't been reached. There's so much more potential that we can get out of him. "He's also key to get the potential out of him as well. He's shown glimpses but we want it to be more consistent and he knows, having the conversations I've had with him, that we're working on getting that consistency which will turn him into a really top player." Since signing permanently for £8 million following promotion, El Ghazi has scored 10 goals in his 49 appearances (34 starts). His Villa career - including his loan spell - stands at 94 appearances, 19 goals and 13 assists.
