Breaking News ! Netflix show The Crown follows the Royal Family throughout Queen Elizabeth’s reign. After season four dropped on Sunday, fans can’t get enough of the Monarch’s life. But writers seem to have missed out some vital drama along the way, including a kidnapping attempt. Although The Crown can’t follow every single event, we’re amazed that they left this out the storyline! In 1974, Princess Anne and her husband, Captain Mark Phillips, were victims of a kidnapping attempt against the Queen’s only daughter. Luckily the Princess Royal escaped after delivering one cool retort. The kidnap attempt resulted in four shootings. So what happened? Princess Anne, her husband and her security were driving down The Mall towards Buckingham Palace, on their way back from a charity event. The couple's marriage was still in its infancy, after their wedding in 1973. They were forced to stop when a black Ford Escort came to a halt in front of them. The driver of the Escort, Ian Ball, jumped from the car and began firing his pistol at them. In an attempt to save the Princess, her security officer, Inspector James Beaton leapt into action, getting out of the car and firing at Ball to disarm him– however, the bullets never came. His firearm had jammed. Ball shot Insp Beaton. Sign up for BerkshireLive's newsletter It's never been more important to stay in touch with the news, so subscribe now to the BerkshireLive newsletter. . He approached the Princess Royal and informed her that he was intending on kidnapping her and holding her for ransom. It is believed that Ball intended to ransom the Princess for between £2 million and £3 million, which he alleges he was going to donate to the National Health Service. It was here that the Princess Royal delivered the coolest line of all, even in the midst of the chaos. Princess Anne simply replied “not bloody likely” and exited out the side door of the limousine with her lady-in-waiting, Rowena Brassey. The Royal briefly considered hitting Ball before her swift exit. To make this story even more bizarre, a passing pedestrian, who happened to be a former boxer named Ron Russell, became aware of the situation. He punched Ball in the back of the head and led Princess Anne away. PC Michael Hills also happened to be passing by. He called for backup before he was shot by Ball, who ran away. Detective Constable Peter Edmonds quickly tracked Ball down and arrested him. In later years the Princess spoke about the ordeal on Parkinson, saying she was 'scrupulously polite' to Ball, as it would be 'silly to be too rude at that stage.' Everyone injured in the failed kidnap attempt recovered The Queen awarded Ron Russell and PC Hills the George Cross for their valiant efforts. The medal is given to people that show ‘acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.’
