Berkshire news Henley Regatta could be held in another location due to Covid MetiNews.Com
MetiNews.Com - Organisers are planning to hold the event in August instead
Breaking News ! Henley Royal Regatta has been postponed due to the ongoing uncertainties surrounding coronavirus restrictions – and there’s a possibility the prestigious event may go ahead in a different location. The regatta is usually held on the Berkshire border, in the nearby town of Henley-on-Thames, and requires significant planning and construction every year, usually starting in March. Due to the time it takes to build the course and the riverside infrastructure, organisers have had to postpone the event until they can be more certain that it will be able to go ahead. The regatta was originally planned for June 29 to July 4, but the event’s Committee of Management is now planning to hold it later in the summer. According to the Prime Minister’s lockdown roadmap, outdoor events could start from May 19 at the earliest, but the date for Step 3 is entirely reliant on cases of the virus remaining at a minimum, and more people receiving the vaccine. The regatta has been postponed to instead take place from August 10 to August 15. However, if the event has to take place behind closed doors because of the regulations surrounding Covid then organisers may need to move elsewhere. Henley Royal Regatta is usually held along the Thames Path – a public right of way – meaning stewards would have difficulty limiting any crowds that may turn up to watch the racing.

The possibility, therefore, remains that the 2021 Regatta may ultimately be cancelled. “We recognise and regret that these revised dates will present a challenge to many in the sport, especially school and university boat clubs. They will also present a challenge to our suppliers, contractors, local traders, landowners and the Henley and Remenham communities. “It is, therefore, our task in the coming weeks to engage with as many stakeholders as possible, and ascertain the feasibility of staging a Regatta in August.” What do you think about the changes to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta?
