Breaking News ! Almost 60 people from Berkshire died with Covid-19 in the space of a week - new figures show. The data, released by the Office for National Statistics, shows a total of 58 people from across the county had the coronavirus mentioned on their death certificates in the seven days up to January 1 2021. The number of deaths recorded for that week may rise as the figures only include deaths registered up until January 9. The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead recorded the most deaths with Covid-19 over that week - with 14. Slough had the second most, with 12. Reading and West Berkshire both had ten each. Bracknell Forest and Wokingham had the fewest - with six each. Most of the deaths, 42, were recorded in hospitals - with another 12 in care homes, three in private homes.

In this afternoon's daily update, the Government said a further 1,564 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday – the highest number of UK deaths reported on a single day since the outbreak began. The previous highest daily toll was on Friday, when 1,325 were reported to have died. The newly reported deaths brings the UK total to 84,767. The Government also said that, as of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 47,525 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK. It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 3,211,576.
