Breaking News ! Police in Berkshire and neighbouring counties recorded almost 140 crimes resulting in at least one death over the past five years - figures show. Thames Valley Police recorded 137 crimes between the financial years 2016/17 and 2020/21 that had led to at least one death - around 30 a year - across the force area, which includes Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. That includes 68 murders recorded over that period. However, there were also at least 30 deaths caused by careless or inconsiderate driving. Other ways in which potentially criminal acts led to people’s deaths were ten reports of manslaughter and 11 cases of aiding suicide. There were also 10 cases where someone was killed by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Over the five year period, there were three intentional destruction of a viable unborn child and three corporate manslaughter. This is when a business or organisation is found to have caused a person's death through a gross breach of duty of care to the deceased. Unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured drivers caused the death of at least two people. Across England and Wales, 4,624 crimes that had led to at least one death were recorded between April 2016 and March 2021. That doesn't include 2,917 cases of dangerous driving that either caused death or serious injuries, so the number of deadly crimes is likely to be even higher. Of the crimes, there were 2,653 murders, 578 manslaughters and 42 corporate manslaughters recorded.

Careless or inconsiderate driving caused at least 698 deaths, while careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs led to 102 deaths. Criminals were responsible causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person 190 times during the last five years, and there were also nine incidents of infanticide during that time. Kultar Nayyar, Services Director for Victim Support’s National Homicide Service, a charity mainly supporting murder and manslaughter victims and families, said: “It’s shocking that nearly 8,000 crimes reported over the last five years have led to the death of someone [across the UK]. Bereavement has a devastating, life changing impact on families and when this is caused by crime it becomes even more complex. “Our national Homicide Service provides families with a specialist case worker from as soon as a few days following murder or manslaughter. They provide much needed emotional support to help them cope and recover from the psychological effects of a traumatic bereavement. “They also provide practical help such as guiding them through the processes of the criminal justice system, support with accessing legal advice as well as acting as an advocate in dealing with issues such as housing, finance, employment and welfare.” Read More Related Articles Reading affray sees two arrested as Thames Valley Police investigation continues Read More Related Articles Maidenhead funfair robbery sees man hit with glass bottle and metal rod Offence Description // 2016/17 // 2017/18 // 2018/19 // 2019/20 // 2020/21 // Total Aiding suicide // 1 // 1 // 4 // 1 // 4 // 11 Causing death by aggravated vehicle taking // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 Causing death by careless driving under influence of drink or drugs // 4 // 4 // 2 // 0 // 0 // 10 Causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving // 6 // 7 // 11 // 6 // 0 // 30 Causing death by driving: unlicensed or disqualified or uninsured drivers // 0 // 0 // 1 // 1 // // 2 Causing death or serious injury by dangerous driving // 31 // 26 // 36 // 20 // 1 // 114 Causing or allowing death of child or vulnerable person // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 Corporate manslaughter // 3 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 3 Infanticide // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 // 0 Intentional destruction of a viable unborn child // 0 // 0 // 0 // 1 // 2 // 3 Manslaughter // 2 // 3 // 4 // 0 // 1 // 10 Murder // 14 // 15 // 12 // 17 // 10 // 68
